A Taste
     Of Thavnair

Nestled in a quiet corner of the bustling city of Radz-at-Han, the Petala Tea House is a place of mystery and intrigue. If you ask the locals, no could tell you when or how it got there, just that it appeared one day and has been there ever since. The owner himself is just as much a mystery as the building; some locals have even gone as far as to stake the place out after closing to find out where he lives. But, strangely enough, no one has ever seen him enter... or leave. If you decide to visit, you'll find a wide array of tea selections, ranging from local favorites to custom blends made by the owner himself. Included in the selection are locally loved snacks and sweets, each chosen to be the perfect accompaniment to whatever drink- or drinks!- you decide to try.

Sweet

   Pongal . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .2000g

Every day we get to drink good tea is a celebration! This is a traditional celebratory dessert that translates to "boil over." It gets this name from the process of making it - rice is cooked in milk with added cardamom, golden raisins, cashews jaggery, ghee and nutmeg until the milk boils enough to overflow! A bit of a mess, but delicious nonetheless.
Made to order and just enough for one. You may request a full pot for the table if you have three or more guests. Best enjoyed with a tea without milk.

   Mysore Pak . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2000g

A decadently sweet dessert, traditionally served with more mellow teas. A perfect mix of ghee (clarified butter), flour and sugar cooked over a hot pot until a thick paste forms. It is then cooled until it can be cut into portioned squares, garnished with a touch of slivered pistachios on top.
Served in four small portions per order. We highly recommend eating this with an unsweet tea, as it easily provides that sugary taste you crave.

   Gulab Jamun . . . . . . . . . . . .2000g

Bringing a dessert traditionally served in weddings to your table. Dough balls are fried in ghee until crispy, then soaked over night in a sugar syrup made from sugar, rose water, cardamom, saffron and lemon juice. It is finished off with a sprig of mint and a few small strands of saffron placed on top.
Served six pieces per serving, set inside a bowl with extra syrup poured over the top. This tastes the best served with our Masala Chai.

   Assorted Cookies . . . . . . . . 2000g

A collection of small, assorted cookies in traditional Thavnairian flavor pairings. Includes Pistachio Honey thumbprint, Basil Rose, Chocolate Saffron and Cardamom Mango thumbprint. All cookies were made the night before opening and have the texture of a typical shortbread.
Served two cookies per flavor. Because of the variation in taste, these cookies go well with many types of teas on our menu. Please feel free to experiment or ask for a recommendation!

Savory

   Samosa . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .2000g

A traditional, fairly well known snack throughout Thavnair. Deep fried dough encases a mixture of potatoes, peas, mild chilis and lemon juice mixed with various spices such as cumin, graham masala, fennel and chili powder. Deep-fried goodness with a bit of a kick.
Served two per order with a sweet chili dipping sauce. Best served with a thicker, milkier tea. Ask about our Schezwan variety for more spice!

*Please note that if you request our spicier variety, we add quite a lot of spice! You must roll a /random 20 to see how well you tolerate it!

   Paneer Pakora . . . . . . . . . . 2000g

Who doesn't love battered, deep fried cheese? Bite-sized cubes of paneer cheese are coated in a batter of spices, including chaat and graham masala, chili powder, ajwain and ginger green chili paste before being deep fried to a golden, crispy perfection.
Served in large batches with a side of coriander mint chutney. It is a heavy snack, so it best pairs with a lighter herbal or floral-based tea.

   Dosa. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .2000g

Dosa is a thin, crispy crepe-like dish made from fermented rice and black gram. It has quite the crunch, and is accompanied by a coconut chutney, a vegetable stew called Sambar, tomato chutney, and a potato masala hash, all used for dipping and combining to your hearts content.
Served with two large dosas and their accompaniments. Best paired with a chai variety or one of our many fruit teas.

   Stuffed Naan . . . . . . . . . . . 2000g

Made in the traditional method of tossing batter onto the side of a heated clay pot called a Tandoor and waiting for it to come off on its own, this menu item comes with a variety of stuffing. From regular Naan to Garlic Herb, Paneer, Potato Masala spiced and Butter Curry made fresh before every opening. Comes with a side of refreshing coconut chutney.
*Served cut in triangles with two pieces of each variety. Many teas would fit this dish, so feel free to be adventurous. Or ask our staff for a recommendation!
